Why go?
Çanakkale (pronounced chah-NAK-kah-leh) stands at the Dardanelles straits between European and Asian Turkey, a travel hub since antiquity. With 144,000 residents and the Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University (ÇOMÜ), it has a youthful student atmosphere. The city is the closest modern town to ancient Troy (30 km south) and the key staging point for visiting the Gallipoli battlefields across the water at Eceabat. Its strategic location controlled access to Istanbul, the Black Sea, and Russia for centuries.

Get in
The main bus station (Otogar) connects to Istanbul (6-7 hours), Ankara, and Izmir. The ferry pier links to Eceabat across the Dardanelles (15 min crossing). Çanakkale Airport has flights three days a week from Ankara. Driving from Istanbul takes 5-6 hours via the new highway system. Most travelers arrive by bus from Istanbul or cross from the Gallipoli peninsula.

Get around
Most places in the compact city center are in walking distance along the waterfront promenade. Dolmuşes (shared minibuses) run toward the War History Museum and the beach strip to the south. Car rental is available: Avis is by the ferry pier, Budget 500 m north along the waterfront. The tourist office has closed, but travel agents sell tours to Troy and Gallipoli.

When to go
Spring (April-May) and fall are ideal: mild temperatures, occasional rain showers that don't last. Summers are hot (30°C highs, occasional 35°C), dry and sunny with strong northerly winds called Meltemi. Winters are cool (highs just below 10°C) with rainy spells and occasional Lodos windstorms that cancel ferries. Snow falls most years but rarely accumulates heavily. The city is famously windy year-round.

Safety
Çanakkale is a safe university city with normal precautions. The main risks are windstorms in winter that cancel ferries. Swimming the Dardanelles (1.5 km wide, 70 m deep) is extremely dangerous and should only be attempted with experienced support organizations like Swimtrek, not as casual recreation. Watch for ferry schedule disruptions during Lodos windstorms.
