Why Go

Fianarantsoa (commonly abbreviated Fianar) is a gateway city in Madagascar's central highlands, serving as a critical transportation hub where roads converge from Antananarivo, Manakara, Ambalavao-Toliara, and Ranomafana. The city is the cultural heart of Madagascar's Betsileo ethnic community and offers a preserved historical old town with churches and traditional buildings undergoing restoration. Travelers use Fianar as a base for the iconic FCE narrow-gauge railway journey to Manakara, tea plantation visits at Sahambavy, and access to nearby national parks and traditional village experiences.

Get In

Fianarantsoa has a small airfield but no scheduled flights as of November 2017. The city is connected by the historic FCE narrow-gauge railway to the port city of Manakara on the east coast, though trains are unreliable due to poor equipment condition. For road access, Cotisse Transport operates two daily minibus services from Antananarivo (gare routière du nord) to Fianarantsoa at 35,000 Ar per person with advance seat reservation; the journey takes approximately 9 hours. For all other routes, rely on taxi-brousse (bush taxis) departing from the station near the train station, busiest in early morning.

Get Around

The area of interest in Fianarantsoa is compact enough to explore on foot. City taxis have no meters, so negotiate fares before entering; expect to be quoted around 5,000 Ar for trips within town. Taxi-be lines operated by aging Mercedes-Benz TN buses run routes for just 500 Ar per trip, though there is no route map or schedule available.

When To Go

Fianarantsoa can be visited year-round, though road conditions deteriorate during the rainy season (November-March), particularly affecting access to attractions like Soatanana village. The dry season (May-October) offers better road conditions for day trips and the FCE railway is reportedly more reliable. Tuesday is market day when the city center transforms into a large market selling everything local families need.

Things To Do

The Historical part of Fianarantsoa (Vieille Ville) is being restored with traditional building styles; hiring a guide for an hour or two is optional but helpful for appreciating the churches, galleries, and hilltop views. The FCE Railway is a highlight for railway enthusiasts: first-class reserved seats cost 70,000 Ar to Manakara, 30,000 Ar to Andrambovato, or 40,000 Ar to Manapatrana; trains depart Saturdays and Tuesdays at 07:00, with the 12-24 hour journey through rainforest offering vendors selling fruit, peanuts, crayfish, and samosas at stations. Bring water, food, insect repellent, and patience as breakdowns (en panne) are common.

Day Trips

Soatanana village (35km via N42, plus 7km side road) offers Sunday visits to the Christian Mpiandry community mass with white-robed processions and warm welcomes including complimentary lunch; bring contributions for offerings; a 4x4 is necessary with budget around 350,000 Ar for car, fuel, and driver-guide for the round trip. Sahambavy (home of Madagascar's largest tea plantation) allows visits to plantation and factory for 5,000 Ar per person; Lac Hotel offers lunch or overnight stays. Go Next

For southbound travel toward Toliara or Fort-Dauphin, Ambalavao is the logical next stop and worth a day trip to the Anja Community Reserve. Ranomafana National Park is accessible by taxi-brousse toward Manakara; plan to stay at least two days. If the FCE train is operational, continue to Manakara or stop at intermediate stations. On the return north, consider stopping in Antsirabe.

    Historical part of the city

There are efforts to preserve the historical part of Fianarantsoa with its churches and traditional buildings. Old buildings are being restored or re-built, the use of corrugated sheets for covering roofs is discouraged, and all new buildings have to be conform to the traditional style. It is worth walking around and see some of the community facilities, galleries and nice views from the hill. You can hire a guide for an hour or two, even if it is not really necessary.
