Why go?

Antananarivo, also known as Tana, is the capital and largest city of Madagascar. It offers more universities, nightclubs, art venues, and medical services than any other city on the island. Major historic landmarks include the reconstructed royal palaces, Andafiavaratra Palace, and four 19th-century martyr cathedrals. The city's architecture is a mix of French and Indonesian styles, with rice paddies adding green to pastel terracotta buildings.

Getting in

Antananarivo is the main entry point for Madagascar by air. International flights arrive at Ivato International Airport (IATA: TNR). Several bus stations serve domestic destinations: Gare routière du Nord for northern routes, Gare Routiere de l'est for eastern routes, and Farakana bus station for southern routes. Cotisse Transport offers daily services to major cities with free Wi-Fi on board.

Getting around

The city centre is focused on Avenue de L'Independence. Taxis are preferred by tourists; agree on the rate before entering (short rides around 5,000 Ar, airport transfer 40,000–60,000 Ar). Taxi-bes are old Mercedes vans running fixed routes for about 600 Ar. Analakely is fairly navigable on foot but watch for market stalls and holes.

When to go

Antananarivo has a mountainous temperate climate due to its elevation of 1,300–1,400 m. The rainy season is from November to April, with most of the 1,400 mm annual rainfall. The dry season from May to October is pleasant and sunny but chilly at night. Daily temperature variations are small, with means from 22.2°C to 15.3°C.

Food and drink

Local specialties include zebu dishes, such as at Grill De Rova. THB (Three Horses Beer) is the local beer. Try Bonbon Anglais soft drink and Betsa-betsa (coconut alcohol). For dining, La Brasserie at the France Hotel offers inexpensive meals, including vegetarian lasagne for 13,000 Ar. KudeTa serves French-influenced Malagasy food. Bottled water is essential (Pura Vida, 1.5 L for about 3,000 Ar).

Things to do

Visit the Rova (Queen's Palace) for panoramic city views, though the palace was fire-damaged. The nearby Prime Minister's Palace museum displays royal artifacts (3,000 Ar). Lemurs' Park, 25 km west, offers close encounters with lemurs (70,000 Ar including guide). Croc Farm, near the airport, features crocodiles and other animals (25,000 Ar). Also see Tsimbazaza Zoo and the Museum of Art and Archaeology.

Safety

Beware of stray dogs in the city. Beggars, especially children, can be a nuisance; a polite 'Non, merci' or 'Tsy misy' should suffice. Avoid carrying valuable items in crowded areas. Vehicles may be in poor condition but engines are well-maintained. During daylight, the city is relatively safe with common sense.
