Erzurum is conservative and traditional. Dress modestly when visiting mosques and religious sites. Remove shoes before entering mosques. The city has a strong military and educational tradition.

Turkish Lira (TL) is the local currency. ATMs are widely available. Credit cards accepted at hotels and larger restaurants. Bargaining is not expected in shops but possible at markets.
Transport
Erzurum Airport is 15 km northwest with flights from Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, and Antalya. The Doğu Ekspresi train connects Ankara and Kars. City center is walkable; buses and dolmuşes available for longer routes.
Weather
High altitude (1890 m) means bitter cold winters (-10°C to -20°C) with dry conditions limiting snowfall. Early summer is wettest. Best visiting seasons are late spring through early autumn for sightseeing, December-March for skiing.
