Overview
Elvas is a compact, fortified hilltop city in Portugal's Alentejo region, best known for its UNESCO-listed Garrison Border Town of Elvas and Fortifications—a world-class example of trace italienne (star fort) military architecture. The 6-km-long Amoreira Aqueduct, with four tiers of arches reaching 40 m, is an engineering marvel begun in the 15th century and completed in 1622.

Before you go
Connectivity
Mobile coverage is standard Portuguese 4G. WiFi is available at hotels and some cafes. Portugal uses Type F electrical plugs (220V).
Money
Portugal uses the euro (€). ATMs are available in the city centre. Most restaurants and hotels accept card payments.
Safety
Elvas is a quiet, safe city. The main risks are uneven cobblestones inside the walls and the steep uphill walk to the outlying forts.
Transport
Public transport is extremely limited—a single daily train and sporadic buses. Renting a car is the most practical option for exploring beyond the walkable old city.
Weather
Hot summers (30°C+) and mild winters are typical of the Alentejo plains. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable sightseeing weather.
