Overview
Elista is a unique stop on the Russian steppe: the only capital in Europe where Buddhism is the primary religion, with golden temples visible across the city. The Golden Temple (Burkhan Bakshin Altan Sume) opened in 2005 with the Dalai Lama's blessing and claims to be the largest Buddhist temple on the continent.

Culture
Elista is the only Buddhist capital in Europe, with Kalmyk Buddhism representing the dominant religious tradition in the city.
Food
Kalmyk cuisine combines steppe traditions with Russian and Central Asian influences; tea is a staple drink served throughout the day.
History
The city carries Soviet-era trauma: Kalmyks were deported under Stalin in WWII and only allowed to return after his death in the 1950s.
Transport
Elista Airport suspended operations following the Russian invasion of Ukraine; regular flights to Volgograd and Rostov remain with onward bus or train connections to Elista.
