Overview
El Castillo is a small, car-free town on the San Juan River where a 1670s Spanish fortress guards against rapids that once thwarted pirates and a young Horatio Nelson. The town serves as the gateway to the Indio Maiz Biological Reserve and offers jungle lodges, kayak rentals, and seasonal river shrimp for travelers venturing into Nicaragua's southeastern frontier.
