Overview
Eiheiji is a small mountain town in Fukui Prefecture renowned for Eiheiji Temple, the head sanctuary of the Soto Zen school, established in 1244 by Zen Master Dogen. The temple has survived 700 years of disasters and wars, maintaining its status as one of Japan's most respected Zen sanctuaries with over 200 monks in training at any time.
