Why Go?

Durrës is Albania's chief port and most accessible coastal city, serving as the main gateway for ferries from Italy. The city combines sandy beaches along its promenade with significant Roman and Byzantine ruins including the largest amphitheater in the Balkans. Its "always on" street market culture provides a lively atmosphere from early morning until late, while nearby beaches at Golem and Lalzit Bay offer retreats from the city center.

Getting In

The Ferry Terminal (Terminali i Trageteve) operates ferries to Bari and Ancona in Italy. The main Bus Terminal near the old railway station handles most intercity buses including connections from Tirana, with some international routes and a direct airport bus available. For travel south to Berat (450 lek), use the Plepat Bus Station at the southern end of the promenade, as most buses will not continue into central Durrës.

Getting Around

The city is relatively walkable, particularly along the sea front promenade and between major attractions in the center. Local buses connect the City Bus Terminal to the Plepat Bus Station at the southern end of the promenade. Taxis are available throughout the city for reaching more distant beach areas.

Where to Stay

Accommodation options range from budget hotels near the port to beachfront properties along the promenade. Hotel Nais offers doubles from €40 including breakfast, located just 100 meters from the port toward the town center. Hotel Lido Durrës is priced around €50, while Hotel Adriatik near the beach starts from €100 in April 2026. For budget travelers, several unlisted hostels and guesthouses offer lower rates in the city center.

Food and Drink

Traditional Albanian cuisine is well-represented with SAF offering traditional lunch menus at 200-500 lek, served from around noon with fresh daily specials. Splendid Restaurant on Egnatia Street is particularly known for fresh fish, while Restaurant Tirona offers affordable seafood at local-favorite prices. For panoramic views, Bar Restorant Kajser near King Zog's Villa serves baked lamb and ice cream combinations (400 lek) overlooking the city. Pizza spots include Piceri Belvedere and Piceri 2 Engjejt on Taulantia and Hysen Myshketa streets respectively. The Venetian Tower bar offers drinks with coastal views.

Things to Do

The Durrës Amphitheater is the largest in the Balkans, with restored iconography and tunnels accessible via ticket, situated next to the Medieval Hammam and Tophane Well within the Ancient City Walls. The Venetian Tower (Rotonda) dates to the 16th century with steep stairs to the top and multimedia presentations. King Zog's Villa on the hill above the city offers spectacular views despite being partially ruined. The Archaeological Museum on Rruga Taulantia is temporarily closed until 2026. For beach activities, Golem beach 7km south features long sandy beaches popular with locals and foreigners, while Lalzit Bay 25km north offers a more exclusive beach experience.

Safety

Durrës is generally safe for travelers but be aware of petty theft in crowded market areas and near the beach promenade at night. The area is tectonically active with unstable geology—future earthquakes may cause ground liquefaction affecting newer developments. Use registered taxis and avoid walking alone on poorly lit streets late at night.

Connectivity

5G service is now available (2026). As of September 2021, Vodafone has the best mobile coverage with 4G in Durrës and other main towns plus highways between them. One and ALB operators have 4G in Durrës but less extensive coverage elsewhere. WiFi is commonly available in hotels, restaurants, and cafes throughout the city center.
