Overview
Dundee is a small coal-mining town of 35,000 in KwaZulu-Natal that functions as the gateway to one of South Africa's most historically significant regions. The town itself is quiet, but it sits within a one-hour drive of multiple major 19th-century battlefields where the Anglo-Zulu War and the Battle of Blood River unfolded.

Before you go
History
The Battlefields region covers multiple 19th-century conflict sites from both the Anglo-Zulu War and the Great Trek. Plan at least two full days to adequately cover the main sites.
Money
South African Rand (ZAR) is the currency. ATMs available in Dundee town center. Credit cards accepted at larger establishments and museums.
Transport
Private vehicle strongly recommended. Renting a car in Durban and driving to Dundee offers most flexibility for battlefield touring.
Weather
Winter months (May-September) offer the best touring conditions with dry roads and mild temperatures. Summer brings heat and rain that can damage roads to remote sites.
