Overview
Dongying is a mid-sized industrial city in northern Shandong province, best known as the site of the Shengli Oilfield, China's second-largest oil field. The city straddles the Yellow River delta, offering access to expansive wetlands that serve as critical habitat for migratory birds including the Oriental White Stork and Whooper Swan.

Local specialty is donkey meat. Sichuan cuisine is most popular. Basic Western food (McDonald's, KFC, Pizza Hut) available in West City. Coffee is mostly instant or of questionable quality.
Money
Taxi rides are cheap at ¥6-7 for the first few kilometers. Credit cards are likely accepted at larger hotels and malls but cash is essential for local markets and smaller establishments.
Safety
Taxis drive recklessly—speak up if needed. Avoid small unlicensed KTVs. Standard urban precautions suffice otherwise.
Transport
Dongying Bus Terminal connects to Jinan, Qingdao, and Beijing. Dongying Shengli Airport serves major domestic routes. Within the city, buses cost ¥1-2 but are infrequent.
Weather
Best visited in autumn (September-October) for clear skies and mild temperatures. Summers are hot and rainy; winters are cold and dry. Spring is windy with temperature swings.
