Homestays with air conditioning cost Rp250,000-Rp300,000 per night. During Indonesian holidays, hotels fill quickly but homestays and Tanjung Batu remain options.
Food
Beer costs around Rp40,000 per can. Bring food for Kakaban and Sangalaki trips as there are no restaurants on those islands.
Money
Only one ATM on the Derawan Islands accepts Indonesian cards only. Bring sufficient cash for accommodation, diving, food, and activities as credit cards are not widely accepted.
Transport
Speedboats connect Derawan to Tarakan (3-4 hours), Berau via Tanjung Batu (30 minutes), and nearby islands. Charter boats cost around Rp3,000,000; scheduled ferries to Derawan depart Thursdays from Tegkayu port.
Weather
Best months are March-May and August-October to avoid dangerous sea conditions with high waves, strong currents, and low visibility.
