Languages: English, Malay
Why Go
Semporna is the primary gateway to Sabah's legendary dive sites including Sipadan, consistently ranked among the world's top dive destinations. The town itself has a population of around 135,000 and offers limited urban attractions, but its real value lies in access to world-class diving and snorkeling. Most visitors are divers or snorkelers using Semporna as a base for island-hopping trips to surrounding marine parks.

Getting In
Semporna is located on the east coast of Sabah in East Malaysia. The most common arrival method is via bus or van from Tawau (about 2-3 hours) or from Kota Kinabalu (longer journey). Commercial passenger vans in yellow operate daily from Tawau starting at 5:30AM from pickup points near KFC and supermarkets. Internal flights arrive at Tawau Airport; visitors then transfer by road to Semporna.

Getting Around
Semporna town is compact and easily explored on foot. For longer distances, 'prebet' or 'kereta sapu' vans serve as informal taxis charging RM1-3 for locals but RM5-10 for tourists—always negotiate the fare before boarding. Commercial passenger vans (yellow, seating 8-12) also operate for village connections and longer routes like to Tawau. These licensed vans depart from near KFC and supermarkets.

See
The Bajau ethnic houses on stilts near the jetty and around the mosque offer cultural insight into Semporna's indigenous community. The Semporna City Mosque provides architectural interest and cultural context. For non-divers, Skull Hill (Bukit Tengkorak Archaeological Site) offers prehistoric artifacts and panoramic island views, located 15 minutes southwest of town and open 9AM-5PM.

Things To Do
Diving and snorkeling are the main activities, with access to Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai, Mataking, and Maiga islands. Major dive operators include Scuba Junkie (largest operation, internationally experienced staff), Sipadan Scuba (only operator with online booking for Sipadan permits), Seaventures (on an oil rig platform), and Big John Scuba (PADI courses, multiple languages). Parapat Hill offers a 30-minute drive and easy hike with island views to the south.

Safety
Unlicensed 'prebet' taxis lack business insurance and travelers should avoid them despite their prevalence. These vehicles wait until they have 4-6 passengers before departing. Use licensed commercial vans (yellow) for safer transport. General crime is low but standard urban precautions apply in the town center.
