Overview
Demirköy (literally 'iron village') is a sleepy forest town in Kırklareli Province with a 15th-century foundry that supplied iron for the Ottoman cannonballs fired during the 1453 conquest of Constantinople. The real draw is its position as a gateway to two natural spectacles: Dupnisa Cave 25 km west, and İğneada Floodplain Forests National Park stretching 15 km along the Black Sea coast.

Before you go
Connectivity
Turkcell 4G covers the main highway. Vodafone is patchy. Türk Telecom has no signal. Download offline maps before traveling.
Money
ATMs available: two in Demirköy, one in İğneada. Turkish Lira is the currency. Cards accepted at some hotels but cash preferred at local cafes and shops.
Packing
Stout shoes are essential for Dupnisa Cave — the path is wet and uneven. Bring layers for mountain weather, and beach gear for İğneada.
Safety
Mountain roads (D565 and back routes) are hazardous — avoid night driving. Dupnisa 'wet cave' closes in winter due to flooding.
Transport
No bus service to Demirköy as of 2021; you need a rental car or your own vehicle. Mountain roads require caution — expect unmarked hazards.
