Before you go
Accommodation
Hotel Česká Koruna on Masarykovo náměstí is the most central option. Budget travelers should look for guesthouses near the main station or along the Elbe. Summer weekends fill quickly due to hikers heading to Bohemian Switzerland.
Etiquette
Standard Czech urban etiquette applies. Greet shopkeepers in Czech shops, remove hats in churches, and follow posted signs on hiking trails. Tipping 10% is customary in restaurants.
Money
Czech Koruna (Kč) is the local currency. Restaurant meals run 22-89 Kč for daily specials, beer 25-40 Kč per half-liter. Most businesses accept cards but carry cash for small establishments and markets.
Transport
Děčín hlavní nádraží sits across the Elbe from the old town and castle—a 10-15 minute walk. Trains to Prague (1hr 30min) and Dresden (46min) use the main station. Local bus lines 1-17 and 15 regional train stations provide intra-city transport.
Weather
Best visited May-September for hiking and boat trips. Winters are cold with limited city attractions but access to nearby ski areas. Spring and autumn offer the best balance of weather and crowd levels.
