Daejeon is the 5th largest city in South Korea, with about 1.44 million people, at the centre of the country and a crossroads of rail and road. It is known as the 'Silicon Valley of Korea' due to Daedeok Science Town, home to over 200 research institutes including KAIST. Yuseong Hot Springs and Daecheong Dam are top attractions.

Climate

Daejeon has a four-season climate with monsoon influence. Monthly mean temperatures range from -1.9°C in January to 25.5°C in August. Summer is hot and rainy, winter cold and dry.

Get in

Daejeon is a road and rail hub. KTX high-speed train from Seoul takes about 1 hour. The nearest airport is Cheongju Airport, 30 minutes north. Express buses connect to major cities.

Get around

One subway line bisects the city. Buses are extensive. Rechargeable Hankkumi cards (₩2,500) offer free transfers and are compatible with Seoul T-money. Taxis are also available.

Top sights include Expo Park (₩2,500 entrance), Yuseong Spa, Daecheong Lake, Mount Bomunsan with cable cars, and the National Cemetery. Many free attractions like Hanbat Arboretum and Dunsan Prehistoric Site.

Street food is cheap: odeng ₩500 per stick, tteokbokki. Famous bakeries: Sungsimdang (since 1956), Cold Butter Bake Shop. Mexican: TacoGang (₩8,000-12,000). Bars in Dunsan-dong and Jungangno areas; note some bars deny entry to foreigners and over-30s.

Daejeon is very safe by global standards. Anti-Western sentiment is low. Elderly drunks occasionally congregate at Daejeon Station at night. Tap water is drinkable but locals often boil or buy bottled water.
