Overview
Cumaná claims the title of oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in mainland South America, founded by Franciscan friars in 1515 as Nuevo Toledo. The city is the birthplace of Antonio José de Sucre, the Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho, a pivotal independence hero who also became Bolivia's first president.
