Why go?

Chorzów is an industrial city in the Silesian Voivodeship with a 2021 population of 105,628. Its main appeal lies in Park Śląski (Culture Park), a vast green space straddling the Katowice border that contains a zoo, planetarium, and Legendia funfair. Football fans may visit for Ruch Chorzów matches at the 9,300-capacity Ruch Stadium. The city serves as a quieter, more affordable base than nearby Katowice for exploring Upper Silesian industrial heritage.

Understand

Chorzów was documented as a mining and metal-working village in 1136 by Pope Innocent II. The town remained small until the 17th-18th centuries when improved mining and steel-making techniques caused expansion. At that time Silesia was within Germany, and Chorzów voted to remain German when Poland re-unified in 1921. From the 1930s, Chorzów incorporated nearby towns and was almost engulfed by Katowice. After Germany's defeat in 1945, most of Silesia was allocated to Poland. The 20th century economy was based on mining, steel, electrical machinery, electronics, and chemicals, all of which collapsed and the region has been reinventing itself since.

Get in

Chorzów Batory Station is the main station, 1 km south of the town centre. Trains from Katowice take only 8 minutes and continue west every 30 minutes to Swietochlowice, Ruda Chebzie, Ruda Śląska, Zabrze, and Gliwice. Another hourly train from Katowice branches north to Chorzów Miasto, Chorzów Stary, Bytom (6 stations), and Tarnowskie Góry, though in early 2024 this train was replaced by a bus. Inter-city trains from Wrocław rush through non-stop; change at Gliwice rather than backtracking through Katowice. From Katowice-Pyrzowice Airport (KTW), take a local bus into Katowice and change — there is no direct transport to Chorzów.

ZTM Metropolia runs almost all buses and trams across the 40-some cities of the Upper Silesian Metropolis, which straddles the Czech border. They have a unified ticket system. Chorzów Miasto Station serves the town centre area.

When to go

The Silesian Zoological Park offers reduced prices November through February when animals shelter from the cold. The Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park has limited visibility November through April as buildings are shuttered for winter. Legendia funfair operates April, May through August daily (11:00-19:00), and September-October on weekends only.
