Overview

Chirripó National Park is home to Cerro Chirripó, Costa Rica's highest mountain at 3,820 m (12,538 ft), and the 38th most prominent peak in the world. The 21.5-km uphill trail from San Gerardo de Rivas to the summit offers a once-in-a-lifetime trek through cloud forests, páramo, and alpine terrain with views of both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans on clear days.

Before you go

Food

Pack all food supplies; no food is available inside the park. Pack-it-in, pack-it-out policy applies.

Packing

Bring sleeping bag, warm layers (temperatures at summit can reach -9°C), all food supplies, and proper hiking gear for 6-12 hour trek.

Safety

Do not hike alone; hire a local guide. Weather at summit is extreme and cold. Register in advance for shelter space.

Transport

Buses connect San Isidro de El General to San Gerardo de Rivas (park gateway). Several cabins offer accommodation along this route.

Weather

Dry season December-April is best for hiking. Wet season May-November is very humid. Summit temperatures can drop to -9°C.
