Catemaco is a small lakeside city in Veracruz State that serves as the gateway to one of Mexico's most biodiverse ecotourism regions. The area around Lake Catemaco and the Laguna de Sontecomapan offers monkeys, exotic birds, waterfalls, mangroves, and jungle reserves reachable by boat or day trips.

Malecon restaurants close around 19:00. Try local Memelas—large filled tortillas famous here. Hotel Playa Cristal's restaurant stays open later.

ATMs are limited in Catemaco; withdraw cash in Veracruz or San Andrés Tuxtla before arriving. Prices quoted in Mexican pesos (M$).
Transport
Taxis start at M$15; rural mixtos cost M$10. Buses run to San Andrés Tuxtla and Veracruz. ADO station is near the Malecon.
