Overview

Castelfranco Veneto is a small walled city between Treviso, Padova, and Vicenza that preserves one of Italy's best-maintained medieval fortifications. The city was founded in the 12th century when Treviso built a fortress here to defend against attacks from Padova, offering tax exemptions to entice residents, which gave the town its name (Castelfranco meaning 'free castle').
