Overview
Cape Reinga (Te Rerenga Wairua) is the northwesternmost tip of New Zealand's Aupouri Peninsula, 110 km north of Kaitaia. The cape holds deep Māori spiritual significance as the 'leaping-off place of spirits' where, according to tradition, the spirits of the dead descend into the underworld.

Before you go
Connectivity
Mobile coverage in the Far Far North can be unreliable. No WiFi facilities exist at the cape. Plan for limited connectivity during your visit.
Culture
The cape area beyond the carpark is sacred Māori land on the spirit pathway. Do not eat, drink, or behave disrespectfully in the spiritual zone. The carpark area is appropriate for these activities.
Safety
Fuel and supplies are extremely limited beyond Waitiki Landing. Carry water and basic supplies. Mosquitoes plague the nearby campsites, especially Kapowairua (Spirits Bay).
Transport
State Highway 1 extends to Cape Reinga from Kaitaia (110 km). Ninety Mile Beach can be driven with 4WD but is not viable for regular vehicles. Fuel up in Kaitaia or Awanui before the journey.
Weather
Coastal winds can be strong year-round. The exposed headland offers no shelter. Summer brings more stable weather but also more visitors.
