Why Go

Calama is a working Chilean mining city of about 140,000 people, best known as the primary gateway to San Pedro de Atacama. The town itself has little to detain backpackers beyond its central Plaza 23 de Mayo and the St. John the Baptist Cathedral, but it serves as an essential transit hub for exploring the Atacama Desert's geysers, salt flats, and high-altitude villages. Budget travelers save significantly on accommodation here compared to tourist-heavy San Pedro, with basic hotels and hostales offering clean rooms from 29,000 CLP.

Getting In

Calama is accessible by air via El Loa Airport (CJC) withLATAM flights from Santiago, or by long-distance bus from Antofagasta (every 2 hours, frequent service), Iquique, and Arica (overnight routes). Major carriers Turbus and Pullman stop at Terminal de Buses. The KTur bus station on Calle Antofagasta offers direct service to San Pedro de Atacama with departures at 07:30, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, 17:00, and 19:00 (return 07:30-20:45). The Frontera del Norte station runs weekday buses to San Pedro at 07:50, 09:40, 10:45, 13:15, 15:30, and 18:00.

Getting Around

Calama's compact city center is walkable, with pedestrian streets radiating from Plaza 23 de Mayo. Colectivos (shared taxis) run fixed routes for 700 CLP, while city buses marked with letters of the alphabet cost approximately 300 CLP per ride. The Terminal de Buses and most budget accommodations cluster within a few blocks of each other near the city center.

When To Go

The Atacama Desert experiences extreme temperature variations year-round: searing daytime heat and freezing nights. May brings winter cold with temperatures dropping to -15°C at night in high-altitude areas. The Geysers of Tatio sit at 4,200m elevation, with approaches reaching 4,700m—acclimatization is essential to avoid altitude sickness. The driest months (December-February) offer clearest skies but peak prices in San Pedro.

Where To Stay

Budget accommodations cluster near the bus terminals and city center. Hostal Nativo on Sotomayor 2215 offers clean rooms with hot showers and WiFi from 29,000 CLP. Hotel Aymara on Abapoa 2120 A provides bigger rooms with breakfast included at 30,000 pesos. Both are conveniently located within walking distance of the Terminal de Buses for early morning departures to San Pedro de Atacama.

Food And Drink

Basic market fare and simple restaurants serve the city, with more options near Plaza 23 de Mayo and along Avenida O'Higgins. The Feria Modelo market offers local food and clothes in one place. For better restaurant variety, budget travelers often eat before arriving in Calama or bring provisions from larger cities. San Pedro de Atacama has more tourist-oriented dining but at significantly higher prices.

Things To Do

The St. John the Baptist Cathedral (Catedral de San Juan Bautista) anchors Plaza 23 de Mayo, with pedestrian streets extending east along Eleuterio Ramírez. A small amusement park near the main square provides entertainment for children. The city's main mall includes a movie theater, though all films show in Spanish only. The Codelco Norte visitor office organizes free guided tours of Chuquicamata, the world's largest open-pit copper mine, available Monday-Friday by advance reservation at visitas@codelco.cl or +56 552322122, departing at 13:00.

Day Trips

A 4WD expedition into the Atacama Desert reveals remarkable landscapes. Chiu-Chiu village (35 km northeast) features ancient ruins, a lagoon, and colonial churches. The beautiful Lasana canyon cuts green through the desert, a striking contrast to surrounding aridity. The Geysers of Tatio require a several-hour drive across salt flats and rugged roads—camp on the north side and enter in the morning to avoid the 16,000 CLP per-truck entrance fee, or pay that rate for groups of up to four people. Day-long 4WD rentals cost approximately 40,000 CLP. A memorial for the disappeared sits in the desert along the San Pedro road.

Go Next

San Pedro de Atacama lies just 2 hours away by bus and is the main attraction for most visitors to the region—home to Valle de la Luna, salt flats, and the Tatio geysers. Frequent KTur departures make the connection straightforward. From Calama's Terminal de Buses, continue south to Antofagasta (2-hour intervals) or north to the border regions of Arica and Iquique.

Budget Planning

Calama offers significantly lower costs than San Pedro de Atacama. Budget accommodation runs 29,000-30,000 CLP for a basic hostal with breakfast. Local transport within the city costs 300-700 CLP. A full-day 4WD rental to explore desert attractions (geysers, Chiu-Chiu, Lasana) averages 40,000 CLP, shared among passengers. Bus fares to San Pedro range from 3,000 CLP (KTur) to higher prices on premium carriers. Budget travelers can explore the region on 25,000-35,000 CLP daily excluding accommodation.
