Cabo Frio is a popular beach destination drawing beachgoers and surfers from across Rio de Janeiro state and the landlocked Minas Gerais. Founded in the 16th century after the Portuguese expelled the French, the city grew to over 216,000 residents by 2017, combining historic colonial architecture with modern tourism amenities.
