Overview

Brno is the major city of Moravia and the second-largest in the Czech Republic, with over 400,000 residents. It was founded around 1000 AD and served as the capital of Moravia until 1948. The city boasts a rich history, three castles (Špilberk, Veveří, Líšeň), and a large historic preservation zone. With about 89,000 university students, it has a vibrant, youthful atmosphere. Connectivity

4G from all carriers; 5G patchy. Free Wi-Fi in many cafes.

Culture

Brno is a student city with many pubs and cultural events. The local dialect calls the tram 'šalina'.

Food

Try Starobrno beer, Kofola, and smažený sýr. A meal and drink can cost around €7.

Money

ATMs at fio banka, KB, and Raiffeisenbank in the city centre do not charge withdrawal fees. Credit cards are widely accepted, but some smaller establishments may be cash-only.

Safety

Avoid the main train station and Cejl district after dark due to pickpockets and unsavoury characters.

Tipping

Tipping 10% is customary in restaurants; round up at pubs.

Transport

Public transport tickets cost 20 Kč (15 min) or 25 Kč (60 min). The Beep&Go contactless system caps daily fare at 90 Kč. Night buses run every 30-60 min from the main station.

Weather

Best visited May-September for warm weather and festivals. The Ignis Brunensis fireworks run late May-early June.
