Overview

Bouzigues is a charming oyster-farming town on the northern shore of Étang de Thau in Hérault, southern France. It is best known for its shellfish production and excellent seafood restaurants serving ultra-fresh oysters, mussels, and bouillabaisse.

Accommodation

Accommodation is limited with few options. Hotels run €65–€190 per night. A small campsite (Lou Labech) charges €16–€30 for two people. A tourist tax of €1.65 per person per night applies. Book ahead in summer.

Free WiFi at Le Globe bar. French power uses Type C/E plugs (220V). Nearest internet café is in Sète.

Culture

The annual Oyster Fair (Foire aux Huîtres) in mid-August draws 20,000 visitors. Other festivals include Carnaval (April), Feast of Saint Peter (June 30), Bastille Day (July 13–14), and Feast of Saint James (July 26–28).

Food

Bouzigues is famous for oysters (huîtres) and mussels from the étang. Expect to pay €16–€32 for seafood platters at local restaurants. Budget options include pizza from €7.50 at Mitcho Pizza. The local Picpoul de Pinet white wine is excellent with seafood.

Money

France uses the Euro (€). There is one ATM on the wall of the marie on rue du Port offering free withdrawals. Most restaurants and shops accept cards but carry some cash for markets and smaller establishments.

Safety

Bouzigues is very safe. No lifeguards on beaches—swim at own risk. Watch for seaweed in the étang; marked swimming area at Plage de la Pyramide.

Transport

Bouzigues is best explored on foot. Buses 103 and 104 connect to Mèze, Montpellier, and surrounding villages. For wider exploration of the Thau Basin, hire a car or bicycle. Sète is the nearest train station with connections across France.

Weather

Best visited May–September for warm weather and full activity schedule. Boat trips operate April–October. Museums open February–November.
