Why go?

Bodrum is a budget mass-market resort on the Southern Aegean coast of Turkey, with a bustling marina, ancient ruins including the Mausoleum of Halikarnassos, and a vibrant nightlife scene. Beaches in town are pebble, but sandy beaches are found in Gümbet and Bitez. The town is also a base for day trips to Kos and the Bodrum Peninsula resorts.

Get in

Milas–Bodrum Airport (BJV) is 35 km northeast, with year-round domestic flights from Istanbul and seasonal charter flights from Europe. Inter-city buses serve Yeni Otogar, which is also the hub for local buses. The airport has car hire from major companies.

Get around

Local buses and dolmuşes fan out from Yeni Otogar to all parts of the peninsula. Bus 2-28 serves Gümbet and Bitez; Bus 2-34 goes to Turgutreis; Bus 2-6 to Yalıkavak. Services run every 10-30 minutes from 07:00 to midnight. Taxis and boat trips also available.

When to go?

Bodrum has a typical Mediterranean climate with hot sunny summers and mild rainy winters. The holiday season extends from April to October, with peak in July and August. The Modern & Jazz Festival is held in April, and the Ballet Festival in July/August.

Where to stay

Accommodation ranges from budget hotels and hostels to all-inclusive resorts. Budget options include Green House Apart Hotel (doubles from 500 TL) and Club Shark Hotel (B&B double 800 TL). Mid-range hotels like Atrium Hotel and Seçkin Konaklar Hotel offer B&B doubles from 1000 TL. Gümbet has many beachfront hotels.

Food & drink

Bodrum's dining scene caters mainly to meat-eaters, with many restaurants serving halal food and alcohol. Cheap eats include Bodrum Kumru and Umurça Pide Salonu for flatbread. For seafood with a view, try Körfez on the marina. Nightlife is vivid with rock bars like Körfez and clubs like Funk and Club Catamaran.

Things to do

Key attractions include Bodrum Castle (housing the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, adult €23), the Mausoleum of Halikarnassos (€3), and the Bodrum Amphitheatre (free). For activities, visit Bodrum Aquapark with 23 waterslides, or go scuba diving with half-a-dozen dive shops. Windsurfing is better on the west coast.
