Why go?
Bled is a popular destination in Slovenia due to its romantic scenery and access point for Triglav National Park. The town features a little white church on an island in the center of an emerald green mountain lake, with Bled Castle perched high above, amidst the Julian Alps.
Getting in
Bled is accessible by train (Bled Jezero station) and bus from Ljubljana and other cities. Driving is also common. The nearest airport is Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (approx 35 km).
Getting around
The town and lake are easily walkable. Bikes can be rented from various operators. A traditional pletna boat takes visitors to Bled Island. Public buses connect nearby villages.
When to go
Summer is peak season with warm weather and crowded lake. Winter offers a frozen lake and fewer crowds. Spring and autumn are mild and less busy. Bled Days festival occurs on the 4th weekend of July, and International Music Festival Bled is early July.
Where to stay
Accommodation ranges from camping (€8.50-12.50) and hostels (dorm beds €15-22) to mid-range hotels (doubles €50-100) and luxury lakeside hotels. Most prices exclude tourist tax of €1.01 per person per night.
Food and drink
Local speciality is kremšnita (cremeschnitte), a vanilla custard and cream cake. Restaurants include Gostilna Pri Planincu (over 100 years), Labod, and Ostarija Peglezn for fish. Castle Restaurant at Bled Castle offers dining with a view. Prices in Bled are inflated due to tourism.
Things to do
Must-sees: Lake Bled, Bled Castle (€18), Bled Island with Church of the Assumption (€3). Activities include swimming at Castle Bathing Area (€6), hiking up Velika Osojnica, summer tobogganing, fishing (permit €20/day), and golf (9 holes €30). Outdoor adventures like canyoning, paragliding, and hot air ballooning are available through agencies.
Safety
Take precautions during outdoor activities. Bled gets extremely crowded in summer, especially weekends. The side of the lake opposite the town is quieter.
