Why go?
Blantyre is Malawi's economic capital and its most cosmopolitan city, named after the birthplace of Scottish explorer David Livingstone. The city offers budget travelers a rare combination of colonial-era architecture, vibrant Asian-run markets, and access to wildlife reserves—all at a fraction of the cost of East Africa's more touristed destinations. Unlike Lilongwe, Blantyre has more established tourist infrastructure with traveler-friendly hostels, diverse restaurant options including authentic Indian and Portuguese cuisine, and a lively expat scene concentrated around the bus station area.

Getting in
Chileka International Airport sits 16 km north of the city and receives flights from Johannesburg and other regional hubs. Overland travelers arrive via the Blantyre railway station, accessible from Mozambique's Tete corridor and Malawi's southern rail network. Minibuses connect Blantyre to Zomba (MK 800-1200) and onward to Cape Maclear (MK 3500), with departures from the main bus station near the clock tower roundabout. Budget-conscious travelers should note that Malawian kwacha prices for transport have increased since 2018.

Getting around
Blantyre is walkable by day—most central attractions, markets, and restaurants sit within a 30-minute radius of Victoria Avenue. Minibuses between Blantyre and neighboring Limbe cost MK 350 (January 2018 prices), while taxi rides start from Mount Soche Hotel and typically run MK 700-1500 depending on distance. Cycling is possible but requires confidence navigating chaotic traffic. After dark, taxis are strongly recommended; the city center near the clock tower is generally safe, but side streets present mugging risk.

When to go
The dry season from May to October offers the most comfortable temperatures (15-25°C) and easiest wildlife viewing, though this is peak season with higher accommodation prices. The cool, dry months of June-August are ideal for combining Blantyre visits with trips to Majete Wildlife Reserve. The rainy season from November through April makes rural roads difficult but brings lower prices and lush green landscapes; October's shoulder season often delivers the best value. January-February are the wettest months with potential flooding affecting some transport routes.
