Overview
Batticaloa is a lagoon city on Puliyanthivu island with Portuguese, Dutch and Hindu influences. Its relaxed pace, seafood and legendary singing-fish tours suit travelers seeking a quieter eastern detour.
Languages: Sinhala, Tamil
Why Go
Batticaloa offers a slower, more authentic alternative to tourist-heavy Trincomalee. The city sits on Puliyanthivu island in a scenic lagoon, with a Portuguese-built fort, Dutch influences, and Hindu temples. The main draw is the legendary "singing fish" phenomenon in the lagoon—a mysterious underwater sound that has puzzled researchers since colonial times. While the nearby beaches at Pasikudah are calm and swimmable, Batticaloa itself is a lagoon city rather than a beach destination, with minimal tourism infrastructure and budget-friendly prices.

Understand
Batticaloa is the capital of Batticaloa District in Eastern Province, Sri Lanka. The old town began on Puliyanthivu, an island in the lagoon now connected to the mainland by three road bridges. The town has been fought over repeatedly: captured by the Portuguese in 1622, taken by the Dutch in 1638, and seized by the British in 1796. During the civil war, the LTTE controlled the area until government forces retook it in 1991. The region suffered devastating losses from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Hinduism is the dominant religion, and Batticaloa has historically been a center of Portuguese Burgher culture, though the Sri Lankan Portuguese creole is now spoken by only around 100 families.

Get Around
The old town on Puliyanthivu island is very compact and easily walkable. Tuk-tuks are available throughout the city; agree on a price before departing. A rule of thumb is approximately Rs. 100 per kilometer. Public Sri Lankan Transport Board buses and private bus and van services are also available for longer routes within the region.

When to Go
The warmest and driest period runs from April to September, with average maximum temperatures around 32°C (88°F). The monsoon season from November to February brings heavy rains that lower temperatures to an average of 25°C. The singing fish tours are best experienced on clear nights, though hearing the fish cannot be guaranteed.

Where to Stay
Accommodation options range from budget to mid-range. The YMCA on Boundary Road South offers the cheapest option at Rs. 6,270 for a 4-bed A/C room, though it requires advance booking and has no mosquito nets. For budget travelers, the Sri-Lanka.Holiday holiday home in Navalady fishing village offers a two-bedroom villa at €29 with air conditioning, bicycles, and beach access 300 meters away. Hotel Bridge View and Hotel East Lagoon on the lagoon provide mid-range options, while Pasikudah Bay hosts higher-end resorts like Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa and Amethyst Resort for those seeking beach luxury.

Food and Drink
Batticaloa is famous for its prawns, crab curd, and cashew nuts. Seafood is widely available and popular. Sri Lankan and Indian cuisines dominate the restaurant scene, with Western food options at hotels. RN Buffet & Take Away in Old Batti offers authentic Italian food, while Sunshine Restaurant on Trinco Road serves Sri Lankan, Indian, and Western dishes from 10:30 to 22:30 daily. Tap water sourced from wells has declining quality due to agricultural runoff contamination, so stick to bottled water. Coconut water is a common local drink, alongside beer and toddy.

Things to Do
The highlight is the nocturnal singing fish tour of the lagoon, organized by hotels and travel agents for around Rs. 1,500 per person (minimum 2, maximum 8 per boat, departs after 22:00, approximately 1 hour). The boatman cuts the motor, you dip an oar and press your ear to the handle to listen for the fish's "songs." Boat travel from Batticaloa Lighthouse to Batticaloa Fort covers about 3 km and is highly recommended. Kudumbimalai ("Hair-knot-rock") is a prime bird-watching location for seasonal and migrating birds. During Hindu festivals, watch traditional kuthu folk dances. Swimming is best at Pasikudah beach, 35 km northwest, where calm shallow lagoons are year-round swimmable.

Stay Safe
On 21 April 2019, the Zion Church in Batticaloa was targeted by militant Islamic suicide bombers, resulting in at least 28 deaths. Travelers should remain aware of security situations at religious sites. Tap water quality has declined as of 2020 due to agricultural runoff contamination—use bottled water instead. The lagoon area was off-limits during civil war curfews, though this has largely normalized for tourism.
