Overview
Batman grew from a village of a few hundred people in the 1950s to a city of several hundred thousand after petroleum was discovered in the surrounding mountains. The city name derives from Batı Raman (Western Raman Mountains) where oil was first found, and predates the Batman comic book character (first appeared in 1939); the city was renamed from Iluh in the 1950s.
