Why go?

Bangalore, also known as Bengaluru, is the capital of Karnataka and a large, cosmopolitan city. It is the major centre of India's information technology industry, earning the nickname 'Silicon Valley of India'. The city enjoys a relatively mild climate year-round, unlike other major Indian cities, and offers a mix of modern urban life and historical attractions.

Understand

Once called the 'Pensioner's Paradise' and the 'Garden City', Bangalore has seen explosive growth in the 20th and 21st centuries. The climate is mild year-round: summer (Feb-May), monsoon (Jun-Oct), winter (Nov-Jan). Summer temperatures can reach 35°C, winter mornings around 15°C. The city has unpredictable weather, with common sunny days followed by evening showers.

Talk

Kannada is the official language, but most people speak English and Hindi. Other languages like Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, and Urdu are also heard. With rising Kannada nationalism, some locals encourage visitors to learn Kannada. Some auto-rickshaw drivers may only speak Kannada and may charge higher to non-speakers.

Get around

Traffic in Bangalore is generally appalling, often ranked as one of India's most congested cities. Allow plenty of time, especially near rush hour. Heavy rains can cause flooding and complete standstills. Metro and bus schedules are integrated into Google Maps.

See

There are city tours that can show you the city efficiently. Tours typically do not include entry fees. Attractions often charge foreigners more than locals; for example, Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace charges ₹15 for Indians/SAARC and ₹200 for non-Indians.

Do

Bangalore offers various activities including cinema, cultural events, and meditation centres. There are several multiplex chains like PVR, Inox, and Cinepolis. The Bangalore Film Society requires club membership (about ₹500/year) for foreign film series. Buddhist meditation centres like Choe Khor Sum Ling and Maha Bodhi Society offer teachings.

Work

As the Silicon Valley of India, Bangalore provides many employment opportunities, especially in IT. Jobs are concentrated in Electronic City (South Bangalore) and Whitefield (East Bangalore). The best ways to find employment are job fairs, job portals, direct applications, and headhunters.

Buy

Bangalore offers a wide range of shopping, from clothing to electronics. It is an IT city, so things can be costlier. Many visitors seek sandalwood carvings and silk saris, but the city's true shopping experience includes malls and local markets.

Eat

Bangalore has a wide variety of food options, from high-end restaurants to street vendors. Note: restaurants label if they serve only vegetarian or both. Seafood quality varies as the city is far from the sea. Popular items include dosas from Upaahara Darshini, biryani from Nagarjuna, and ice cream from Corner House and Naturals. Coconut water is ₹25-30, sugarcane juice ₹10-15. Budget meals range ₹50-200.

Sleep

Budget hotels near KSR railway station are crowded around the Dargah Tawakkal Mastan area, about 1 km from Majestic bus station. Prices under ₹1,500. Alternatively, look around Majestic theatre and Kempe Gowda Bus Station. Avoid the Majestic area if traveling with family, especially newly married, due to suspicious looks.

Stay safe

Bangalore is relatively safe, but most areas shut down before midnight; very safe residential areas can be desolate by 11PM. Lower-income areas can be unsafe after dark. Avoid walking alone on deserted alleyways at night, using auto-rickshaws with two drivers, flaunting valuables, and withdrawing cash from ATMs in deserted areas. Pre-book cabs (Meru, Ola, Uber) when returning late.

Stay healthy

Bangalore is cleaner than other major Indian cities, but tourists should be cautious with tap water and roadside stalls. Use bottled water if the source is unknown. Mosquito repellents (e.g., Odomos) are recommended in the evenings. Carry a minimal medicine kit. Ambulance can be called at 108.
