Overview

Banámichi is a quiet colonial town of about 1,400 people in central Sonora, founded in 1639 at a bend in the Sonora River where the Opata name Banamitzi means 'where the river turns.' The town is known for its sweet green onions (cebolla verde) and green chilies (chili verde) grown in nearby fields, and the surrounding ranches produce beef prized for its special flavor. Visitors come for the 17th-century mission church, an ancient petroglyph stone, warm springs at Bacachi, and the town's role as a stop on the scenic Ruta del Río Sonora driving route through colonial Sonoran towns.
