Overview
Baia Mare is the largest city in the Maramureș region of northwestern Romania and serves as the main transportation hub and economic centre. While the new industrial parts of town may seem unsightly to some visitors, the old neighbourhood and lovely park offer charm.

Baia Mare is a gateway to traditional Maramureș villages with UNESCO wooden churches. The city itself is industrial; authentic culture is in surrounding villages.

Romania uses Romanian Leu (RON). ATMs available in the city centre. Prices for traditional meals at Restaurant Pronto are described as cheap.
Safety
Standard urban precautions apply. The area around train and bus stations is less inviting than the old city centre.
Transport
Baia Mare has railway and bus stations considered among the worst in the EU. Maramureș International Airport offers limited flights to Bucharest and Paris.
