Overview
Avşa is the most heavily touristed of the Marmara Islands, a short ferry journey from Istanbul. Developed as a budget resort in the 1970s while other islands restricted tourist development, it offers sandy coves, affordable accommodation, and local wine-tasting.

Before you go
Connectivity
Vodafone 4G covers most of the island. Turkcell has patchy signal; Türk Telekom has no coverage.
Food
Fish restaurants line the shore in Avşa town. Fish market near the port lets you choose and have your catch cooked.
Language
Turkish is the local language. English/German speakers are more common here than on other Marmara islands, but still limited.
Money
Turkish Lira (TL) is the local currency. Expect to pay 25 TL for ferry from Erdek, 450-500 TL for B&B doubles in peak season.
Safety
Standard precautions: guard valuables, watch for traffic. Sunburn is the main risk; use high-factor sunscreen and avoid midday sun.
Transport
Gestaş ferries run twice daily between Erdek and Avşa, taking 2 hours. No cars needed on the small island; dolmuşes and buses serve the main routes.
Weather
Summers are hot with fierce sun and little shade. The island swells to 50,000 visitors June-Aug. Shoulder seasons offer fewer crowds.
