Overview
Atotonilco El Alto sits at 1,600 meters elevation in the mountains surrounding the Tequila Valley, giving it a cooler, more temperate climate than the hot valley below. The town is a key destination on the Los Altos Tequila Trail, home to Patron and Don Julio, two of Mexico's most famous premium tequila brands, plus smaller artesanal distilleries.

The Parroquia San Miguel Arcángel is an active church; dress modestly when visiting. Ask permission before photographing religious ceremonies or local residents.
Language
Spanish is the local language. English is limited outside major distilleries. Knowing some Spanish improves chances of getting tour access at smaller distilleries like Siete Leguas.

Prices at restaurants and hotels are in Mexican Pesos (MXN). Budget M$200-250 for meals, M$1000-2000 for mid-range hotels.
Transport
Taxis are available near the main plaza and bus station, or ask your hotel to call one. A rental car is useful for reaching outlying distilleries.
