Overview
Atami means "hot ocean" and has been drawing visitors to its hot springs since the 8th century, earning a spot among Japan's Three Great Hot Springs (三大温泉 Sandaionsen). Today it serves as a quick escape from Tokyo—just 40 minutes by Shinkansen—where visitors can soak in onsen, hit a sandy beach in summer, or dive one of the few accessible wreck sites on mainland Japan.
