Overview

Andasibe-Mantadia National Park offers one of Madagascar's most accessible wildlife experiences, centered around the Indri lemur—the largest surviving lemur species, famous for its haunting, whale-like songs that reverberate through the forest each morning and evening. The combined park encompasses both the well-developed Andasibe sector with its easy walking trails and the wilder Mantadia sector, home to denser rainforest and additional lemur species.

Before you go

Connectivity

WiFi is available at mid-range and upscale accommodations like Andasibe Hotel (lobby only) and Chez Luc (restaurant). Mobile data coverage exists but can be unreliable in the rainforest.

Health

Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for travel to eastern Madagascar. The rainforest terrain means slippery paths— Sturdy hiking boots are essential.

Money

Prices at lodges are often quoted in euros or Ariary (MGA). Budget rooms at places like Chez Luc start from 30,000 Ar. Exchange rates vary; ATMs are limited in Andasibe village.

Transport

The park is 150 km from Antananarivo via the RN2 highway (about 3 hours). Taxi-Brousse from Antananarivo to Toamasina can be taken to the Andasibe junction, followed by a 2 km walk to the park.

Weather

The dry season (May-October) is best for wildlife viewing as lemurs are more active and trails are less muddy. The wet season (November-April) brings lush vegetation but heavier rainfall.
