Overview

Aksaray is an under-visited Central Anatolian stop where Seljuk monuments, caravanserais, and the Tuz Gölü salt lake reward a short stay. Use it as a practical base for Ihlara Valley, Güzelyurt, and Cappadocia scenery.

Why go?

Aksaray is a highly underrated city in Central Anatolia, lively and authentic with barely any tourists, cheap accommodation, and countless interesting sights. It was on the Silk Road and has Seljuk architecture like caravanserais. Today it's an industrial town you pass through on the road to Cappadocia.

Get in

The main bus station (otogarı) is 4 km west of town off D750/D300. Dolmuşes connect to the city center, possibly included in bus ticket. The former bus station (Eski Garaj) on Atatürk Blv is still used for dolmuş routes. Dolmuşes to local destinations like Güzelyurt and Ihlara depart from the Tuesday Market area.

Get around

Renting a car is sensible, but hitchhiking is possible outside the city. Dolmuşes (shared vans) are the main local transport. The former bus station (Eski Garaj) is a hub for dolmuş routes.

When to go

The salt lake (Tuz Gölü) is best visited in early summer when there is ankle-deep water for mirror reflections. The city can be visited year-round, but summers are hot and winters cold.
