Overview
Akçaabat is a working Black Sea city of 129,000 that makes a convenient stop when traveling the D010 coastal highway between Trabzon and Samsun. It's best known for its kofta dish (Akçaabat köfte), the lively Horonu folk dance, and hosting an international folklore festival since 1990.

Town beaches are not great. Head to Akçakale for the nearest decent beach with fortress views.

History
Settled by Hellenistic people as Plátanos, then Pontic kingdom, Roman/Byzantine, Ottoman since 1461. Historic mansions in Galinos district.
Transport
The bus station (Otogar) is by the marina. Dolmuşes and taxis serve main streets. D010 runs along the coast.
