Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, endured a brutal civil war that occupied the city twice and devastated infrastructure. Since peace returned in 2002, the population has swelled as rural refugees fled to the city, putting pressure on land and services.

Gola Rainforest National Park protects the largest remaining rainforest in Sierra Leone across 71,070 hectares, spanning North Gola, Central Gola and South Gola. Together with nearby Tiwai Island, it achieved UNESCO World Heritage status in 2025.
