Overview
Zigong (自贡) is a city in East Sichuan that made its fortune from salt production for centuries, earning it the nickname 'Salt Capital of Southwest China.' Today it's better known as a destination primarily for Chinese tourists who come to see its world-class dinosaur museum built on the Dashanpu Formation—one of China's richest dinosaur fossil sites. The city is also the birthplace of China's Lantern Festival tradition, hosting an annual international dinosaur lantern festival that draws visitors from across the country.
