Why go?
Zaqatala is a mountain health resort at 600 m altitude in Azerbaijan's Sheki Region, 450 km from Baku. The wooded Caucasus slopes with frequent waterfalls make it a premier hiking destination in the country. Unlike the capital's pace, Zaqatala offers a multinational community of 26 ethnic groups (Avar, Zakur, Lesgi, Kumuck, Georgian, Russian, and others), a liberal atmosphere, and access to alpine scenery without crowds.

Getting around
Zaqatala is compact enough to explore on foot. The city center and main sites (Heydar Eliyev Park, Dada Gorgud Square, bus station) are within walking distance. Hotels like Hotel Turgud and Hotel Zaqatala are within 300-400 m of the central mosque.

When to go
Summer (30-35°C) offers verdant mountain hiking but is warm. Spring brings heavy rain (most of the 120 cm annual rainfall). Autumn has brown leaves and rain. Winter covers the Caucasus in 50-60 cm of snow—beautiful but may limit access. Summer is peak season for hiking; spring and fall are quieter alternatives.
