Book well in advance for aurora season (Nov-Apr). Hotel availability has been tight since 2023 wildfire evacuation.
Connectivity
WiFi available at library and cafes. Cell service good in city but diminishes beyond 40km on Ingram Trail.
Money
CAD is the local currency. Prices are 30-50% higher than southern Canada due to shipping costs. Credit cards widely accepted in hotels and restaurants.
Safety
Remote driving requires emergency supplies. Use designated aurora viewing areas on Ingram Trail. Bison hazards on Mackenzie River highways.
Transport
Yellowknife is almost entirely accessed by air. Daily flights from Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver. Within town, transit costs $2, taxis available.
Weather
Subarctic climate with extreme winters (-40°C possible). Best aurora viewing November-April. Summers mild (avg 22°C) with long daylight hours.
