Getting in
Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (YWG) is served by major airlines like Air Canada and WestJet, with flights from across Canada and some US hubs. VIA Rail's Union Station offers services to and from the west and east coasts, while Rider Express buses connect to Regina and other prairie cities. The airport is about 7 km west of downtown.

Get around
Winnipeg is spread out, with no urban freeway network. Rush hour traffic jams are common. The Perimeter Highway provides a bypass. Many downtown streets are one-way and left turns are restricted. The North End requires extra caution at night.

When to go
Winnipeg has a humid continental climate with hot summers and very cold winters. Summer (June, late August, September) is pleasant. Winter temperatures are the coldest of any North American city over 100,000. Spring and fall are short and variable. Mosquitoes are abundant in early summer.

Food and drink
Local cuisine includes Winnipeg goldeye, rye bread, pickerel, kubasa, and bannock. Tipping is customary (10-20%). Alcohol is sold through Liquor Marts; legal drinking age is 18. Local breweries include Fort Garry Brewing and Half Pints Brewing. Nightlife options include pubs and clubs.

Where to stay
Major chain hotels are available downtown, near the airport, and on Pembina Hwy. Cheap motels are found throughout the city. Older hotels on Main St should be avoided. A hostel operates out of UWinnipeg residence, available mainly in summer.

Safety
Winnipeg has a moderately high crime rate by Canadian standards, but low violent crime. Areas north of City Hall on Main St and around Central Park require caution at night. Panhandlers are not aggressive. Never leave valuables in your car; theft from vehicles is common.

Top attractions include the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, Royal Canadian Mint, The Forks, Manitoba Museum, Assiniboine Park, and the Exchange District. Sports fans can watch the Winnipeg Jets (NHL), Blue Bombers (CFL), or Goldeyes (baseball).

Provincial sales tax is 7% plus 5% GST (total 12%). Prices usually exclude tax. Bargaining is uncommon. Shops close early, usually by 6PM weekdays, with reduced Sunday hours (9AM-6PM). Shopping malls include Polo Park, St. Vital Centre, and The Forks Market.
