Overview
Wijk bij Duurstede preserves the site of medieval Dorestad, once one of the most important international trade posts in the Low Countries before Viking raids destroyed it in the 9th century. The town is famous for Jakob Isaackszoon van Ruisdael's 1670 painting depicting the Crooked Rhine landscape with dikes and windmills.
