Overview
Wenchang offers a slower, more authentic Hainan experience compared to touristy Sanya. With 520,000 residents and the ancestral home of over a million overseas Chinese (mainly in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam), the city showcases ordinary Hainanese life: tea houses for ¥1-2, table tennis in Wenchang Park, and KTV singing.

Before you go
Accommodation
Downtown Wenchang (Wenjiang Lu and Dongfeng Lu areas) has the most options from ¥60-200. Dongjiao Yelin offers quieter coconut plantation stays with basic amenities. Extended stay discounts are often available at family-run hotels.
Connectivity
WiFi is uncommon outside higher-end hotels. Most budget accommodations lack internet. Purchase a local SIM card for mobile data. English is virtually non-existent except at upscale hotels.
Culture
Wenchang is the cultural center of Hainan and the prestige dialect region for Hainanese. Over a million overseas Chinese trace their ancestry here, mainly from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The overseas Chinese influence is visible in local lifestyle and tea house culture.
Food
Wenchang Chicken is the signature dish of the city and a famous entry in Chinese cuisine. Tea houses offer the cheapest socializing option at ¥1-1.5 per item. Seafood is abundant and affordable, especially in Longlou and at Dongjiao Coconut Groves restaurants.
Language
Hainanese is the main local language, with Wenchang dialect considered the prestige variant. Mandarin is widely spoken due to the education system. English is very limited—prepare translation apps or phrase cards for essential communications.
Money
Chinese Yuan (¥) is the local currency. Most small establishments accept cash only. ATMs are available in downtown Wenchang but limited in Dongjiao Yelin. Carry sufficient cash when traveling to more rural areas like Dongjiao Coconut Groves or Longlou Town.
Safety
Tourism-related scams and crimes are almost unheard of. The area is considered very safe for travelers. Standard precautions apply regarding personal belongings in crowded areas.
Transport
Wenchang Railway Station connects to Haikou (30 min) and Sanya (1h20min) via high-speed rail. Local bus nos. 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 10 serve the bus station. Tourist Buses 1 and 2 connect major attractions. White mini-buses at the bus station go to Qinglan Harbour for ferry to Dongjiao.
