Overview
Vitoria-Gasteiz is the provincial capital of Alava and the political capital of the Basque Country since 1980. The old town features some of the best preserved medieval streets and plazas in the region, and it's one of very few cities with two cathedrals.

Pintxo bars are central to dining culture. Bar-hop in the Casco Viejo around 14:00 for the best atmosphere. Typical pintxo costs 2-4 EUR.

Spanish is the main language; Basque (Euskera) is commonly spoken. English is not widely understood outside tourist areas.
Nightlife
Nightlife concentrated in Casco Viejo. Each street has distinct character from Basque-rock (Cuchilleria) to commercial (Zapateria).
Transport
The city is very walkable; most sights are reachable on foot. Airport has limited connections; Bilbao Airport is 66 km north.
