Overview
Virpazar is a tiny lakeside town on the Montenegrin side of Lake Skadar (Shkodra Lake), the largest lake in the Balkans. Its main appeal is serving as an access point for the lake and as a base for hiking in the surrounding mountains.

Before you go
Accommodation
Skip the Hotel Pelikan's aggressive sales pitch (€40/night). Walk into town and look for local women offering "soba" rooms for under €10 per person.
Activities
Lake Skadar admission is €4 plus €10/person/hour for boat rental. The abandoned castle hike is free and offers great views.
Food
Restaurants serve excellent fresh lake fish paired with Montenegrin wine. This is a place to splurge slightly on a proper meal.
Money
There is an ATM in Virpazar but it can run out of cash. Shops and restaurants do not accept credit cards. Come with sufficient cash or use ATMs in Sutomore (20 min by train) or Golubovci (15 min bus to Podgorica).
Transport
Trains from Podgorica or Bar cost under €5. Buses stop on the main road - you must signal the driver to stop. The "bus stop" is a shed across from Hotel Pelikan.
