Overview
Viana do Castelo is one of Portugal's most beautiful cities, often called the capital of Portuguese gold due to its renowned filigree tradition. The city sits on the Lima River with spectacular Eiffel Bridge views, Blue Flag beaches within 10 minutes of downtown, and hosts one of Portugal's largest religious festivals: the Romaria de Nossa Senhora da Agonia in August.

Before you go
Etiquette
Dress modestly when visiting churches and the basilica. Portuguese meal times are later than Northern Europe (lunch 12:00-15:00, dinner 19:00-22:00). Tipping 5-10% for good service.
Food
Seafood dominates menus: pescada Vianense, cod dishes, and shellfish. Don't miss Bolas de Berlin from Zé Natário. Local vinho verde pairs well with fish dishes.
Language
Portuguese is the local language. English is spoken at hotels, restaurants, and the tourist information office. Basic Portuguese phrases appreciated.
Money
Portugal uses the Euro (€). ATMs widely available. Most restaurants and hotels accept credit cards. Cash still preferred at some small cafes and markets.
Transport
Viana do Castelo railway station connects to regional rail network. Local buses serve beaches and surrounding villages. The city is compact enough for walking in the historic center.
Weather
Atlantic-influenced climate with mild temperatures year-round. Summers (June-August) are warm (25-30°C) and busy with festival season. Winters are mild but wetter.
